Save The Proper British Cafe

My ‘source‘ has kindly provided us with the following information issued by the HP Foods Marketing Department.

HP Foods has just announced a new “Save The Proper British Cafe” promotion in support of the British Cafe. This promotion follows last years hugely successful “Jimmy Brown” and “Paul Smith Limited Edition Bottle” campaigns.

The “Save The Proper British Cafe” campaign featuring the HP Sauce brand is now underway in the United Kingdom and has already picked up television coverage on BBC, ITV and Sky TV and on national radio on Radio 4, Radio 5 and Talksport. The HP Sauce brand is also making appearances in various British national newspapers including the Sun, Daily Telegraph, Daily Express, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail and the Daily Star.

A new campaign website which features an online petition to support the British Cafe has been established at www.proper-british.co.uk and is reported to have already been inundated with visitors signing the petition. Be sure to visit the campaign website and register your support!

So put down that latte and support the Proper British Cafe!

The campaign website has been taken down for the time being with its content replaced with the notice “The Save The British Cafe Site will be back online soon.”. Perhaps people were a little too enthusiastic to register their support! (I’m not naming names!) ;-)

[...] The Save the Proper British Cafe as reported earlier is back online. Be sure to visit and sign the petition to pledge your support! *Note: ‘Somebody’ has already beaten me to the petition! I wonder who that could be? The campaign is also offering a limited edition “Save the Proper British Cafe” wristband for £1.50. Wristband proceeds will go into HPs “Fighting Fund” which they’ve kick-started with an initial contribution of £5,000. The fund is designed to help British cafes fight against the rising popularity of the continental style coffee shop chains in the UK. HP estimates that by 2010, the British cafe will have almost disappeared if the current trend continues unabated and if left unchallenged, the British cafe could soon follow the demise of other British institutions like the red phone box and the Routemaster bus. Paul Harvey, Marketing Manager of HP Sauce: “Hopefully the HP fighting fund will help traditional British cafes re-establish themselves in today’s modern British high streetâ€?. I’ll be buying my own “Save the Proper British Cafe” wristband shortly and I encourage you to do the same! Help by supporting the Save the Proper British Cafe campaign! [...]

Its ironic that HP run a campaign to save the Great British Cafe and
at the same time announce that they will be moving production of HP
    to Holland.
