HP Sauce Rider Toy

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 By Brad

I recently received the following email from Amy in the UK. It reads as follows:

In 1972 my husband had a ride on hp sauce bottle toy, no now knows where this toy went to, but this Christmas my husbands father and step mother gave him one as a present which they had brought from a car boot sale. The person they purchased it from used to collect advertising memorabilia and had never seen another example. My husband (39 years old now) was thrilled with it but a little miffed that he is too big to ride on it!

Amy is curious to know more about her husbands new toy and has requested our help in finding out more information. She’s graciously sent in more pictures in the hopes that they may help bring back some fond memories with some of our readers. They speculate that the HP Sauce Rider Toy dates from the late 1960′s or early 1970′s.

If you do come across any information about the ride on sauce bottle then I would be most interested to hear. In the meantime I think I will try a see if the company that made the thing still exist…

Thanks for putting the pictures of the ride on sauce bottle on the website. Dexter and I look forward to, hopefully, finding out more…

I once had one of these, but instead of riding it I just cut the front off and used it as any other HP sauce bottle. It was the best weekend of my life.

My sister and I had one of those!!! Mum and dad collected tokens from the sauce bottles to get it for us….must have been 1973 (ish).

We used to scoot up and down the garden path on it, Dad called it the “Hotrod” lol, we still talk about it now – wish we’d kept it!

Here’s a picture of me on my “Mammoth Size” HP bottle in 1971.

My Mum & Dad saved tokens too. When I was a little older, I yearned to get the top off to get to all the HP Sauce.

I think it was made by Sharna in Droylesden, Manchester (now long gone), but I could be wrong. I’d love one for my 8 month old son now.

I had a hotrod too! It was early to mid 70s. My mum saved coupons and sent away for it. I spent hours and hours trying to unscrew the lid to see if there really was hp sauce inside. Wish my parents had kept it. The only annoying thing I can remember about it was that you couldn’t steer, so when hurtling down a hill you had to bail out if anything crossed your path! :)

I had one of these as well when I was about 5. I loved this thing and it gave the neighbours a good laugh. I was talking with one of my old neighbours the other day and she still mentions me scooting about the street with it. I would love to get a hold of one fo rmy boy. Happy Days

I have just collected one of these ride-on bottles and will be using it in the next exhibition at The National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. Entitled ProMotion, it will be a display of vehicles built to look like the product they’re advertising, plus small objects, such as teapots, biscuit tins and egg cups that look like vehicles.

These deep knee bends are really good for my back but hard on the chin (oddly enough).
